Another Fun Picture of AuBurn from the fair!
INFORM YOUR CUSTOMERS ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF THE SUN
Skin care is always an important topic to discuss with your customers, but the bulk of sun damage occurs during the summer. While sun exposure increases vitamin D intake, there’s also the risk of wrinkles, sunspots and overexposure. Encourage your customers to apply sunscreen regularly (don’t forget the feet and hands), to keep hydrated and not scrimp on eye creams and lip protection.

July is International Group B Strep Awareness month, focusing on protecting newborn infants from the life-threatening infection, Group B Strep. (GBS) that can pass from a mother to her baby during delivery. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), GBS is the leading cause of pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis in newborns. GBS is responsible for approximately 1,200 cases of early-onset GBS disease each year. With GBS screening, prenatal monitoring and antibiotics, up to 86 percent of GBS infections can be prevented. Every pregnancy is different, so always advise your pregnant customers to get GBS testing. Customers who plan on a C-section should talk to their doctor about their personal GBS plan.
This month’s campaign on the screen includes:
• Strep Awareness
• Summer Skin Care
• Healthy Grilling Recipes
• Outdoor exercise activities and tips

Camp Discovery 2017

Camp Discovery 2017 took place at Rock Springs 4H camp last week.  AuBurn pharmacists Nate Wiehl and Tyler Tush, FCC physician Ross Kimball and KU pharmacy students Mitchell Shelton, Kennedi Smith and Sierra Miles all served as camp staff.  Despite the early hail storm, weather was great and 102 type 1 diabetic children got to experience a great summer camp while learning how to manage their disease.  For many of these kids, this camp is the only opportunity they get to spend time with other children battling type 1 diabetes.  Kids with type 1 diabetes have to take on such a huge responsibility at a young age, but hopefully they come away from camp knowing that diabetes doesn't have to keep them from doing anything they want to do.

Know your Sunscreen

The sun releases harmful rays and they can not only ruin your day but they could also cause more serious issues like cancer. Sunscreen can protect your skin from the rays but knowing which sunscreen is right for you can be very confusing. Here are some helpful hints on how to get the right sunscreen.

Step 1. Don’t choose between UVA and UVB

·         You need protection from both rays.
·         UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the skin's thickest layer. Not protecting your skin from this can lead to premature skin aging and wrinkling, and suppression of the immune system.
·         UVB rays will usually burn the superficial layers of your skin. It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer.

Step 2. Choose your number

·         Get a sunscreen that’s SPF 30+ for safety
§  SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
§  SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays
§  SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays
·         Nothing will block 100%

Step 3. Choose your product

·         Do you want oil, spray, lotion, etc?
§  Creams the face and oils are best for dry skin
§  Gels are good for hairy areas, such as the scalp or chest and legs.
§  Sticks are good to use around the eyes and face.
§  Sprays are sometimes preferred because they are easy to apply. Make sure to use enough of these products to cover all exposed skin. DO NOT inhale these products or apply near heat, open flame or while smoking.
§  There also are sunscreens made for specific purposes, such as for sensitive skin and babies
·         Choose what makes you most comfortable since you will be wearing it.

Step 4. What are you doing?

·         Wear it every day no matter if its cloudy or not
§  Clouds only block 20% of rays
·         Are you going to be in water?
§  Water Resistant (effective for up to 40 minutes in water)
§  Very Water Resistant (effective for up to 80 minutes in water)
§  Reapply after you get out of water and every 2 hours

Step 5. Do you want natural or chemical?

·         Chemical-based sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays with chemicals. A chemical reaction turns the harmful rays into heat, which is then dissipated from skin into the air.
·        Natural, or mineral-based, sunscreens reflect the sun’s rays, like a mirror on. Natural sunscreens protect skin the same as conventional sunscreens

Step 6. When to put it on?

·         Apply sunscreen before going out in the sun so it can fully absorb into the        skin
§  If you are using a chemical sunscreen, it's best to wait around 20 minutes after applying before going outside so it has time to soak into your skin.
·         You don't have to wait for all sunscreens.
§  Sunscreens with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide actives are effective as soon as you put it on.
§  It’s generally a good idea to apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before you go outside.
·        Grown Adults usually need about one ounce of sunscreen per application

Step 7. Don’t Forget!

·         Nose, Toes, Lips and Ear Tips
§  Don’t forget to apply the sunscreen to every piece of exposed skin
·         Sunglasses
§  Sunglass will help protect your eyes from harmful sun rays
·         Don’t forget to check the expiration date
§  Sunscreen will only last up till 3 years
§  If it’s changed colors or changed textures don’t use it

Beating the Heat

Beating the Heat

Summer is near everyone’s favorite time of the year! From beaches to vacations, BBQ’s to baseball; summer includes some of America’s favorite pastimes. Summer can be amazing to some but to others it can also be deadly. In 2014, 244 people died in America because of heat. It can start out by you being light-headed to escalating quickly to delirium and organ damage, it could then lead to death (Summer Safety Tips.) Everyone needs to take safety precautions to beat the heat this summer.

Tips for Beating the Heat:

·         DRINK LOTS OF WATER: Avoid sugary and caffeinated drinks!

Some Other Thirst Quencher for a Hot Summer Day:
   Lemonade Coconut Water
   Lemon water
   Seltzer
   Homemade Sports Drinks

·         Stay in the A/C at the Heat Peaks of the Day

If you don’t have A/C try these hacks:
Try to make a homemade a/c with ice and a fan
Try wetting down a sheet and putting it over a window to cool the breeze down
Avoid using the oven and dryer
Go to an indoor mall or movie theater and take advantage of the cool air

·         Wear Appropriate Clothing

   Wear light colored clothing
Keep your head covered with a hat
   Keep sunglasses on you
Keep skin cover to avoid direct sun

·         SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN

How to know what is best
   Check the UV Rays
Make sure your sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB rays
   REAPPLY, REAPPLY, REAPPLY
You are fine with SPF 30… There is only a few percent differences between that and SPF 100
